Leadership Lessons from the Former GM of Vine

Jason Toff, the former GM at Vine, had a lot to say in the 2016 article he wrote about his experience at the company and what it taught him about leadership. Here are just a handful of the many lessons he shared.

Having and telling a compelling story is the most important thing you do as a leader. Toff firmly believes that convincing other people to believe in your vision is the most important act as a leader, and that repeating that vision and that story again and again is of utmost importance.

Focus is though, as Toff puts it, but from his anecdotes it’s not impossible. Two tricks Toff would use would be writing the team's top three priorities on the wall, and asking each member on the team to write their own three priorities on a spreadsheet in 140 characters. Weekly team-wide meetings were an important part to keeping his team focused and on the same page.

“Make sure you’re doing the maximally impactful thing at all times,” A lesson Toff learned from Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, one that he admits seems obvious but feels is worth pointing out anyway. It’s easy to get bogged down with other people’s requests, and sometimes it’s important to say no in order to focus on priorities.
